The arrival of smartphones opened up the world to unchecked access to hardcore porn which' Daily Mail' and 'The Times' columnist Brenda Power believes, those involved in the Belfast trial were influenced by.
Speaking to Eamon the columnist said, "I don't honestly think that you can distance the sort of material that they were clearly influenced by and re-enacting with access to porn that became so much easier."
"You do have to say where did these pornographic materials that they were acting out, where did they get them?"
According to Brenda research has shown that "early exposure to hardcore porn can have a brain-altering effect on your minds, that it can be traumatising, desensitising that it can generate unhealthily attitudes to woman and sexuality."
"You can't then turn around and say I wonder how these guys have turned out to be so operant in their behaviour."
