Should we make Ireland a Zero Covid Island - Deise Today Thursday 13th August

On the show today Maria speaks to Professor Anthony Staines who is a professor of Health Systems at DCU. He gives his view on how Ireland is handling the Covid-19 crisis and says he is in favour of a 'Zero Covid Island' approach which he believes hasn't been considered by the government.

Students at WIT have expressed concern that they have to return to the college to re-sit their exams next week. From August 17th, anyone who needs to repeat Christmas Semester 1 exams will have to do so on site. Maria hears from Fianna Fail councillor Eamonn Quinlan who is re-sitting exams himself and Rhiannon Kavanagh, WIT students union education officer.

Has there been an increase in stress in the workplace due to Covid-19? Maria discusses this with Suzanne Feeney, director of recruitment agency Robert Walters Ireland.

Dungarvan Hockey Clubs mini astro turf pitch was destroyed in the early hours of yesterday morning. The club say they are devastated as the pitch was only laid 12 months ago at a cost of €5000.

Demonstrations will take place across Ireland this Sunday, including in Ballybricken in Waterford, calling for harsher punishments for dog thieves following a spate of robberies over the past few months. Maria hears from John Kelly about this.

Andrew Holden tells Maria about a visit to the Theatre Royal last night, as the venue opened its doors for the first time since lockdown. The theatre has limited capacity and social distancing restrictions in place. He tells Maria what the experience was like.

Maria also speaks to film director Paddy Slattery as his film "Broken Law" is one of the only Irish films in cinemas at the moment. He tells her about the experience of making the movie. (Watch the trailer below)
