Waterford Sinn Féin Councillor Breda Brennan is stepping down from the council next month.

She was first elected in 2014 and has served as the Metropolitan Mayor.

The Waterford city south representative has submitted her letter of resignation to the council and will finish her term on May 25th.

Speaking to Damien Tiernan on Déise Today, Breda says that she made the decision due to family commitments.

"The last year has been the year that it was and a lot of people have taken stock of their lives and I'm one of those.

"I've given the people of Waterford City South and beyond 7 years of my life and have probably neglected my family to some extent but I want to rectify that now," she said.

Aside from her duties as a Sinn Féin representative for the local authority, Cllr Brennan is a Grandmother and she said she's looking forward to spending time with her grandchildren.

"It's a huge undertaking, first of all, to put your forward because nobody likes to be rejected - luckily I wasn't in 2014 and I was re-elected again in 2019.

"I've got three wonderful grandchildren - Ella is almost 10, Theo is eight, and Lydia was born last year during the pandemic in lockdown. She [Lydia] will be nine months old on the 19th of April and I want to be part of their lives," she said.
