The new Waterford FC manager Marc Bircham says he was urged against taking the job.

The Londoner has been tasked with turning around the Blues' season after taking over last month, with the club sitting bottom of the table with two wins from 14 games.

Birchham, who was previously a coach at QPR in the Championship, told Damien Tiernan on Deise Today that friends in England and Ireland tried to persuade him against coming to Waterford, but he wasn't having it.

"I won't name names, but people [have said don't take it] because they didn't think the situation was a good situation to be going in. They didn't think the squad was good enough," he said.

However he figured, "bottom of the league, can't get any worse" and so decided to take the job. Bircham added: "Tell me I can't do it, I'll prove you wrong."

He believes the situation can be turned around in the coming months: "I like to prove people wrong. I think it's because people said don't take it."
