On Friday, 23rd of February, the annual Waterford Business Awards will take place in Faithlegg House Hotel  in association with Waterford Chamber, WLR and Waterford City and County Council , celebrating the best in Waterford business across 10 categories. In each category, 3 local businesses are shortlisted, and every day on WLR in the lead up to the gala awards ceremony, we’ll be putting the spotlight on a different awards category:

Today it’s Community and Social Enterprise sponsored by Faithlegg House Hotel and the shortlist is:

GIY

GIY  inspires and supports people to grow some of their own food at home, school, work and in the community. Growing food inspires “food empathy”, a deeper connection with food which acts as a platform to a healthier life.  In 2018, GIY will support over 800,000 people to grow their own food in 8,000 community food projects across Ireland and the UK.  The home of the GIY movement, GROW HQ at Ardkeen in Waterford is an award-winning café/bistro, shop, food gardens and education centre.  GIY’s brand new 7-part series GROW COOK EAT will air on RTE 1 TV from March to May this year.

REBIKE

Rebike is a community initiative started by Paul Carroll in 2014 providing cycling equipment for those who would otherwise not have access to a bike. To date, over 500 bicycles that were destined for the scrapyard, have been recycled and given free of charge to community groups, schools and families who are not in a position to afford a bike for a child. Paul is currently renovating an old retail premises in Dungarvan, which will become the Rebike Greenway Cafe, to provide ongoing financial support for the bicycle recycling activities.

THE SHONA PROJECT

The Shona Project educates, inspires and empowers Irish girls to become tomorrow’s strong, resilient and confident women. Launched by Tammy D’Arcy in October 2016, the project has already reached over 100,000 young people through their website, events and school workshops and are creating change in terms of how girls see themselves and each other. They celebrate women from all over the world, those who succeed and those who overcome, those who lead and those who think. By coming together and sharing their stories, they shape the future of young women in Ireland.
