Blues fail to take points against Drogheda

Drogheda United 2 Waterford FC 0

Waterford FC lost back to back league games for the first time since April as Drogheda United took all three points in their SSE Airtricity Premier Division at Weavers Park.

Keith Long made three changes to the side that lost out to Galway a fortnight ago with new signing Louis Jones coming straight into the side following the injury to Sam Sargeant who will be sidelined for at least six weeks with a fractured hand.

Christie Pattisson came back after injury in place of Connor Evans who picked up a knock last week while Niall O Keeffe came in for Kacper Radkowski who dropped to the bench.

And as in their previous two meetings it was Drogheda who got the early breakthrough.

A long throw was flicked on by Andrew Quinn and Louis Jones seemed to be in no trouble as he rose to gather the ball. But as he came back to ground he bumped into Grant Horton and the loose ball was pounced on by Frantz Pierrot.

Waterford's first chance only came two minutes before halftime when Dean McMenamy's shot was easily held by Luke Dennison.

It was McMenamy who again tested the keeper on 56 minutes but Dennison dived to smother the shot and on the hour mark a glancing header from Padraig Amond was just off target.

Waterford's loose passing was punished a minute from time when Luke Heeney intercepted a Blues' pass and he sent Adam Foley away and the Drogheda substitute calmly slotted the ball under Jones to make the game safe.
