Wildcats U20s are National Cup Champions

Waterford Wildcats 68 - 65 Brunell Cork (AET)

The Waterford Wildcats' U20s scooped the big prize yesterday in Dublin, winning the National Cup at the expense of Brunell Cork in extra time.

Brunell led the game up for the majority of the first half, but good work from Jillian Hayes' team saw them reel in the deficit before the halftime buzzer, going a point ahead by the break.

The game looked like slipping away from the Wildcats early in the third quarter with Brunell applying significant pressure.

Coming from behind in the final quarter, Waterford fought to keep one hand on the cup. They reduced the gap to 3 points with just nine seconds left on the clock when Caitlin Gloeckner took the game into her own hands shooting a three-point jump shot to level matters at 60 points apiece, sending the contest to overtime.

Both sides started to show signs of tiredness in the extra period, but with five minutes remaining, the Wildcats had enough in the tank to edge their opponents by three at the final buzzer.

Top scorers Waterford: Sarah Hickey 29 (awarded MVP), Caitlin Gloeckner 19, Orla Dullaghan 8.
