Waterford book their place in a first All-Ireland final in 78 years

Waterford 1-12

Tipperary 1-11

Waterford are in the All-Ireland Senior Camogie Championship Final for the first time in 78 years.

The Deise downed their provincial conquerors Tipperary on a scoreline of 1-12 to 1-11, with Vikki Falconer, Beth Carton and Mairead Power among those who starred on a historic day for camogie in the county.

Tipperary had lead 1-7 to 0-3 at one point, but Sean Power's side showed grit and determination which was deserving of a place in an All-Irland final, fighting back at Nowlan Park to cement a famous day on the Nore.

Waterford were looking to book their place in a first All-Ireland final since 1945, while Tipperary hadn't made it to the decider since 2006 - the eighth successive season in which they had done so having been on a stellar run from 1999 to 2006.

This was the second successive season that the Deise found themselves among the last four, having previously not made it to the semi-final stages in 63 years.

Tipperary started brightly with the two opening scores before Waterford responded in turn via Abbie Flynn and Beth Carton, but they had goalkeeper Brianna O'Regan to thank that they weren't further behind when she made an excellent stop to deny Caoimhe McIntyre on 11 minutes.

Eimear McGrath proved prolific from the dead ball as Tipperary motored 7-3 ahead on quarter of an hour, before Cait Devane mercilessly fired into the top left corner having been played in by Roisin Howard to put Waterford seven points behind midway through the first half.

Instead of knocking Waterford, this seemed to do the opposite - as a Carton-inspired Deise began to chip into their opponent's advantage.

Lorraine Bray knocked over her first point, before Mairead Power picked the perfect time to pop up with her first score of the 2023 championship - plundering to the net on 24 minutes to reduce arrears further.

Annie Fitzgerald's efforts and two further scores from Carton wrestled momentum back Waterford's direction, as they entered the break just one point down - the scoreline finely poised at 1-7 to 1-6 in Tipperary's favour.

Tipperary grabbed the first score of the second period, but Abbie Flynn's second point of the day kept the Deise ticking, before the superb Carton evaded three players and split the post for her fifth point of the afternoon.

Substitute Clara Griffin then played the De La Salle ace in to knock over her sixth and proceedings were suddenly level, before who else but Carton drove Waterford ahead with fifteen minutes left on the clock.

Karen Kennedy then fouled Carton who was on hand once again to punish the Premier's indiscipline, before an outstanding long-range free from goalkeeper Brianna O'Regan gave Waterford breathing room with a three point lead and three minutes remaining.

Laoise Forrest made a superb tackle on Caoimhe McIntyre as Tipperary threw the kitchen sink in Waterford's direction, but they continued to withstand the pressure - the immense Vikki Falconer leading the way at the back for the Deise.

Cait Devane's late score had everyone on edge at Nowlan Park, but there were joyous and emotional scenes at the final whistle - as Waterford ripped up the history books to rightfully book their place in the decider.
