Blues Need Extra Time to Secure Munster Senior Cup Victory

Waterford FC  2   Douglas Hall 0 (AET)

Waterford FC advanced to the quarter finals of the Munster Senior Cup with a hard fought extratime victory over Munster Senior League outfit Douglas Hall of Cork.

The Blues were playing in their first outing of the season while the Cork outfit are currently second in the MSL

Just three of the side that started the promotion game started this match with three more who came on as a sub making the starting eleven while there were debuts for new signings Ben McCormack, Gbemi Arubi and Joe Forde.

While the Blues looked comfortable in the opening forty five minutes the Cork outfit also had a number of chances, the first after just five minutes when Chris O Reilly crossed low for his brother Timmy but Forde was on hand to block the effort. Jonah Obode almost caught Sam Sargeant just before the break when he spotted the Blues' keeper outside his area and Sargeant managed to get his hand to the long range effort.

Waterford's best chance came midway through the opening period when Conor Parsons was fouled on the edge of the box and Dean McMenamey stepped up to fire an excellent free kick that Adrian O Donovan just managed to touch over.

The second half saw the home side up the tempo with O Donovan again denying McMenamy - this time with a long range effort while Gbemi Arubi met a Ronan Mansfield cross but his header was off target.

Douglas Hall had a great opportunity to snatch a win with six minutes remaining when David Bosnjak intercepted a loose pass from Darragh Leahy and raced goalwards before firing high towards the top corner. However, Sargeant dived full length to touch the ball away for a corner.

The best opportunity in extra time arrived for the visitors when Bosnjak appeared to be fouled by Mansfield inside the area but Ian O Keeffe waved away the penalty shouts.

Ben McCormack broke the deadlock with two minutes remaining in extratime when he picked up the ball on the left and cut in before unleashing a wonderful strike to the top corner.

And a minute later Cam Cresswell raced onto a through ball and slotted past O Donovan to seal the victory.

The Blues will now face the winner of Cork City and Wilton United in the quarterfinal.
