Former Waterford hurling manager Michael Ryan believes that too many frees are being blown in the senior club championship.

"There seems to be a big gulf in consistency in referees. In inter county games in general, a lot of things seem to be left go and maybe fouls are being left go. In my opinion, in the Waterford championship, there's a lot of soft frees being given. By the letter of the law and as per the rulebook, they probably are frees but I don't think it's doing anything for Waterford going forward at inter county level. When we play the Limericks and the Clares, we're not going to get those frees. I'd prefer to see more consistency. I think the GAA in general have got to find a norm. Maybe at inter county, too much is being left go. I've seen it in Kilkenny and I've seen it in Tipperary, a lot of those frees aren't being given. Maybe, it could be looked at."
