Former Waterford boss Donal O'Rourke hopes that the Camogie Association will listen to inter county players and embrace a split season for 2021.
Last week, the governing body revealed that the National League will be run first from May 15, followed by the club championships and then the inter county championships. "Having lost 4 months from the normal playing calendar due to COVID-19 restrictions in both jurisdictions, the priority for the association was confirmed as providing as much Camogie to as many girls as possible in the remaining 8 months of the year."
84% of players surveyed by the WGPA voted to boycott the upcoming National League if the current structure remains in place.
"It's very disappointing for the players," O'Rourke told WLR. "The players have to be listened to at this level. Clubs might be hoodwinked into thinking that they'll be playing camogie during the summer but they'll only get five or six weeks. I think that it's unfair all round. The camogie players themselves just want to be treated fairly. It's very difficult to go and play a league campaign and then go back to the play with your club and then go back into an inter county championship at the back end of the year. It's going to be very difficult for the players to do that. You're trying to peak twice in the year which is not an easy thing to do. I hope that common sense prevails and that they'll listen to the players."
