A Waterford soccer legend will be remembered at a friendly match in the RSC next weekend.

Waterford FC will host Shamrock Rovers on Sunday the 26th of January at 5.00 pm.

It's in commemoration of former Blues player Shamie 'Major' Coad who died in May last year at the age of 81.

Shamie's son Gary told Waterford FC.ie that the family are delighted with the fixture.

"Shamie, fondly known as "Major" made his debut for the Blues against Shamrock Rovers on the 5th of October 1956 so to have been invited to be part of this wonderful fixture, was something we are really excited for.

"Shamie though was not one for the commemorations, he shied away from the spotlight but certainly left his talking on the pitch.

"Shamie loved playing for and supporting the Blues and to have that connection with Shamrock Rovers too, is absolutely brilliant. We'd like to thank everyone at Waterford FC, Shamrock Rovers and the FAI for coming together and putting this fixture on in commemoration of my father. We look forward to a great night as part of one football family".
