RYDER CUP 2023: Lowry & McIlroy represent Team Europe

Excitement is building ahead of the tee-off for the Ryder Cup on Friday. The 44th Ryder Cup Matches will be held in Italy from 29 September to 1 October 2023 at Marco Simone Golf and Country Club in Guidonia Montecelio, northeast of Rome. The biennial event was originally scheduled for 2022 before the 43rd matches were postponed into 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

WLR's Ray Scott is there providing extensive coverage throughout the event. Shane Lowry is representing Ireland on team Europe who are up against the US.

He says being a team player is important to him.

"Team sports growing up played a big part in my life and I think it's where I get my competitiveness from my dad and his brothers and my uncles. Growing up in that environment was pretty cool. I think a lot of it has got me to where I am today.

"I feel like I am just myself. I don't try to be anyone else on the team or here but just be myself and that happens to be what I am."

Rory McIlroy is representing Northern Ireland for Team Europe. He says to win would be a massive achievement for his team.

I think if you are playing for Europe or the US  there has to be an advantage to that. That's why I have said this for the last number of years. Winning an away Ryder Cup is probably one of the biggest achievements in Golf right now."

The Ryder Cup updates on WLR are thanks to Suir Engineering.
