Tom Guiry from The Nire has been appointed as Waterford minor football manager.

The position had been vacant since Tom Flynn stepped down in November. Guiry will be joined by coach David Robinson and team secretary Gavin Whelan with two more selectors to be added.

Waterford County Board Chairman Paddy Joe Ryan said that they found it difficult to fill the position. He told WLR Sport that it "isn't easy to get people".

"We put a good team together, we're hoping to put a few more people with them this week as we want to get the management team up to five."

He hopes that the team will return to training soon after two months of uncertainty. Waterford face Tipperary in the first round of the Munster championship on April 10.

"They'll be back training next week hopefully, they'll be swinging into action straight away, getting a panel together and discussing with dual players where we are with them.

"We have three games in the minor football this year. We go straight into the minor hurling the week after."

Paddy Joe Ryan also appealed to clubs for nominations for the role of under 20 football manager.

He says they didn't look for an Under 20 football manager yet because they wanted to fill the minor first.

We've asked the clubs to come back with recommendations for [under 20]. We've a lot of very proud football clubs in the county and we'll see will they come back. If they don't we have to go out on the ground then looking for people. I've no doubt that we'll get people but we'd love if somebody came forward from the clubs who is really enthusiastic and we would give them all the support we could."
