Among the many changes which could be heralded by the Waterford GAA strategic plan for 2021-2030, one of the more unexpected could be the possibility of a new championship tier in the future.
Speaking at the presentation of the "Waterford Rising" plan, county board Chairman Sean Michael O' Regan said that conversations have happened with a view towards introducing a new “Premier Intermediate” championship" to try and bring greater competition and balance to the current championships.
"You look at our senior hurling championship for the moment – are all of the teams at the appropriate standard and maybe competing at that grade?"
"Equally so, we’ve seen over the last number of years, winners of intermediate going up and maybe coming back down pretty soon after – kind of a revolving door."
"We’re just exploring it and its out there. We feel that with the task force being looked at that the upper end intermediate clubs, with those and maybe reducing the number of senior."
"Maybe that would be a very attractive intermediate championship – maybe “Premier Intermediate” championship."
"That’s just the thought process on it that we feel there could be a serious win on that one."
