McGregor eyes Kerry clash as "a chance that we can take."

Fitzgerald Stadium is the destination for the Waterford ladies' footballers this Sunday with Kerry on hosting duties for round two of the league.

Pat Sullivan's Déise missed out on a win in the curtain raiser with Armagh last weekend, losing 2.08 to 2.03 in Crossmaglen.

"We kind of gave the game away and we know that," says attacker Lauren McGregor.

"The two goals, we basically handed to them. It was just errors on our behalf but at this level, you can't really afford to be making mistakes like that, teams will punish you."

Waterford find themselves two points down following that loss and are now preparing to take something from Kerry, who beat the All-Ireland Champions Dublin last weekend.

"We watched the game last weekend when we were up in Armagh. They had a mixture of a team out - they had a couple of girls from last year and then a lot of new girls. It is a chance that we can take, that we could beat them. If we perform well, we have a chance at beating them but we need to play better than we did last weekend."

McGregor bagged both of Waterford's goals last weekend, as well as a point from play. While it might not have been enough to secure the win, the Dungarvan native says she's not the biggest of players, so she has to rely on the top two inches more often than not.

"No one else really reacted to that ball [first goal] dropping short and I was just the one that got in there and picked it up and was just on the line to get it. I have to be smart with the way I play because I'm never going to catch a high ball coming in, so it's probably looking for that breaking ball underneath someone."

The manager, Sullivan, has a mostly settled squad to choose from this season, with the lion's share of last year's players still involved. A host of new faces are waiting in the wings for their chance as the minors are regularly training with the senior side.

One of the players who offers continuity from last year is the new captain Kelly Ann Hogan who replaces Karen McGrath in the role. The Ballymacarbry star is a key player according to McGregor.

"Kelly Ann is brilliant. She'll work all day. She'll run all day. If we're losing kickouts, Kelly Ann will come up the field and pick one up. She's great to work back and she'll chip in with a few scores as well. She has a great head on her as well, I suppose it's from playing with Ballymac for years, she has great experience with them. She wouldn't say much, but when she says something she knows what she's saying. She's brilliant and I'm delighted for her to get that opportunity."
