Waterford's Thomas Barr is through to the semi-final of the 400m hurdles at the Olympic Games.

The Ferrybank AC man came in with a time of 49.02 seconds to finish second in his heat behind world record holder, Norway's Karsten Warholm.

A delighted Barr said he was happy with his assured performance.

"It felt good it was nice and controlled... I went out nice and relaxed and that was the aim to go out calm and relaxed in the heat.

"I'm always a bit nervous for the first round heats of a championship because you never know what way it's going to go.

"My aim going into this was to get second place behind Warholm and I know he could turn on the tap so there was no point in trying to go past him," Barr said.
