A stunning late goal from Waterford's Mikey Kiely has sent UL into the final of the Fitzgibbon Cup.

A strike from the Abbeyside man from 45 yards out saw the back of the net, seconds before the final whistle in the semi-final against IT Carlow at their home grounds.

The final score was 1-27 to 2-23 in favour of the Limerick students.

The winning goal is being described as "Paul Flynn-esque."

Kiely compared to Paul Flynn

Speaking to Oisín Langan after the game, Kiely said "I asked the ref was there much left and he said 'last puck' so I just hit the ball as hard as I could."

When asked if he was trying to dip it towards the crossbar, "like Paul Flynn all those years ago against Cork in Thurles," the modest full forward answered "there's no comparing to Paul Flynn, Paul Flynn's just a hero."

Meanwhile, it looks like UL will be without Clare’s Mark Rogers for Saturday’s final against NUIG.

The Scariff forward went off injured during last night’s dramatic semi-final win. Prior to his early departure, Rogers contributed six points to his side's total.

Looking ahead to the game against the NUIG, UL Manager Brian Ryan said overcoming the Galway students will be no mean feat, praising the side for a "tremendous Fitzgibbon," adding that "like ourselves they have strength and depth, now, they were challenged yesterday by GMIT so they were put to the pin of their collar. So you've two teams that have come through a very tough campaign to get to the final."

Throw for the Fitzgibbon Cup Final between UL and NUIG is 3.15pm tomorrow, Saturday February 19th at IT Carlow.
