Katie Murray is the October winner of the Waterford Sports Awards, in association with WLR and the Granville Hotel.
Murray was the star of the show as Comeragh Rangers created Ladies’ Football history - beating 42-in-a-row champions Ballymacarbry in the Waterford Senior Ladies’ Football Championship Final to clinch a first ever county crown. Murray was unplayable on the
evening in question - scoring 4-0 from play as they won out 5-3 to 1-6.
She also starred as they made their way to a first Munster senior final - defeating Moyle Rovers of Tipperary and Aghada of Cork along the way before going down to Kerry’s Castleisland Desmonds in the decider. Murray finished the Waterford Senior Football
Championship with a whopping 10-24 from play.
Speaking when accepting the award, Murray said: “I’m delighted to receive the award. We’ve had a great month since the 11th of October. I think it’s meant a lot to the team and to the parish as well - we’ve had a big crowd at all our matches. Not only did it mean a lot to the team, it meant a lot to the three parishes as well and everyone in the community.”
Murray played down her personal feat of scoring four goals in the county final - saying ‘it could happen to anyone’.
“One of the goals was actually an OG! - I don’t know if I can take full credit for that. It could happen to anyone I suppose, in the Moyle Rovers game - Emma got a hat-trick and I didn’t score at all. In the Aghada game, Aoibhe Shankey was the one scoring. One day you could be setting them up and the next day you could be on the end of it - and that just happened to be the night that people were setting them up for me and I just happened to be the one taking the shots.”
Each month, an outstanding sports star will be crowned the winner of the monthly WLR Granville Waterford Sports Awards.
The 12 monthly recipients will then gather for a black-tie Gala Banquet at the Granville Hotel in January 2025, where the first WLR Granville Waterford Sports Star of the Year will be revealed.
