Some pretty big news has emerged from the RSC this morning and its right in time for Christmas.

The signings have been continuing these last few days with Junior Quitirna set to remain at the club for 2023. That news was preceded by the announcement of Dean McMenamy who will wear the blue jersey in the new year having made the move from Shamrock Rovers following a loan spell at Longford.

However, the first off-field appointment has now been made and it's not one that you might have been expecting.

Former Ireland forward Johnathan Walters is the new technical director of the club.

The club say that he will "share the role with sister club Fleetwood Town in League One, and will be tasked with helping to get The Blues back to the Premier Division while building a long-term strategy."

The 39-year-old Walters retired from football in 2019 having struggled to recover from an achilles injury while on loan at Ipswitch. Walters, has been set the challenge of overseeing "the club’s long-term football strategy, working closely with Head Coach Danny Searle as well as the club’s Academy and medical departments."

Speaking to WaterfordFC.ie, club owner Andy Pilley said that Walters is "an experienced and knowledgeable character who can help the club move to the next level in structure, recruitment and sporting success on the pitch.

“It’s a hugely exciting appointment and these are exciting times for Waterford Football Club. We want to take the club to the next level.”
