After his bronze medal performance a few days ago Joe Gough was back in action this morning at the European Masters Championships in Portugal.
The West Waterford AC athelte qualified in the heats of the 1,500 meters and was up against the world record holder Paul Forbes in the final.
The Owning man put in a brilliant effort over the closing laps to take gold in a new Irish record of 4.50.84 with Forbes taking silver in 4.50.95.
Nicola Tighe Waterford AC is in action here later today in the 60-meter hurdles final.
At day one of the Irish life health national senior indoors held at the national arena Abbottstown Waterford athletes were to the fore.
In the first event of the day  - two medals went the way of West Waterford athletes when Kate Veale retained her indoor senior crown over 3,000 meters - her fifth senior indoor crown in a row. The bronze was won by Doireann Hickey (West Waterford) in her first senior indoor championship took a great bronze.
