Three-time All Star Jamie Barron was back to his best as Fourmilewater picked up their first win of the 2022 championship against Clonea on a sweltering Saturday evening in Dungarvan (3-24 to 0-19). The midfield magician shot 1-3 to seal second place in Group D.
A dominant half back line of Tholom Guiry, Tom Barron and Oisin Walsh also helped Michael Ryan's men recover from an opening day loss. Fourmile's win means that Dungarvan, Roanmore, Ballygunner and Mount Sion are the four clubs to qualify automatically for the quarter finals.
On six minutes, Barron buried a penalty into the bottom corner after he was fouled (1-1 to 0-0). He scored 1-2 by the interval.
Clonea started without injured pair Conor Dalton and Kieran Power. Free taker Jason Gleeson got the first of his four first half points in the eighth minute. Three Ciaran Kirwan singles and two from Billy Power brought the Eastern side level approaching half time. Darragh Duggan's men were guilty of eight wides and two short into the goalkeeper however.
On 29 minutes, Sean Walsh beat two Clonea defenders but saw his shot saved by Stephen Power. Shane O'Meara smashed the rebound to the back of the net. Aaron Ryan added his fourth point as Fourmile led 2-8 to 0-11 at the break.
The Ballymacarbry side blitzed their opponents at the start of the second half with five points in as many minutes. Sean Walsh, Tholom Guiry, Ciaran Walsh, Aaron Ryan and Tom Barron were all on target.
Fourmile defender Oisin Walsh swept the ball off the line from a Ciaran Kirwan shot on 42 minutes. It was one way traffic after that. Corner forward Ciaran Walsh finished with six points from play (five in the second half). A minute from the end, Sean Walsh forced home a third Fourmile goal.
