The National elite boxing Championships get underway this evening at the National Stadium in Dublin.

One Waterford boxer will be in action today with Seamie McDonagh representing St. Pauls in the 63.5kg weight class.

McDonagh is the youngest competitor in his weight class and goes up against Dean Clancy from Sean McDermott's boxing club.

McDonagh comes to this Championships having won the National U22's last February, as well as boxing for Ireland at the U22 Euro's in Croatia.

In Croatia, Seamie was denied the hopes of a medal when he faced Turkish boxer Kerem Ozmen.

With the Paris Olympics on the horizon, this year's Championships may be a step too far for the St Pauls man, but it will nonetheless provide an excellent opportunity to get minutes in the ring at the highest level.

McDonagh is listed in bout number 6 this evening, with the card getting underway from 7 pm.

Tomorrow, three Waterford boxers are in action with Sen Purcell representing Saviour's Crystals' at 57kg, Zara Breslin from Tramore goes up against Clodagh Greene at 60kg and Dungarvan resident Christina Desmond is scheduled to face Evelyn Igharo at 70kg.
