Waterford FC go head to head with Bohemians tonight, with a place in the FAI Cup Final up for grabs.

The Blues haven't won the cup in 41 years. 2004 was the last time they made the final - losing out to Longford Town.

Marc Bircham's men visit Dalymount Park on a fine run of form.

They've beaten Athlone Town, Kilnamanagh and UCD on their route to the final four - and will bring a strong crowd of buses to Dublin for tonight's crunch clash.

The affinity of Blues' supporters with the cup is as strong as ever.

Nigel Kelly caught up with Blues super-fans Shane Murphy and Alan Forristal to discuss what making a cup final and perhaps even lifting the silverware on offer would mean to supporters across our city and county.

'You can't go a day without mention of 1980'

Shane Murphy told WLR that the support making their way to the capital is not just from the city, with a bus also leaving from Dungarvan.

"The Dungarvan crowd are bringing a bus which is full up. There are several buses going from the city. There's tonnes of people driving up. We got around 900 tickets and most of them have sold at this stage. It's gonna be huge. The Blues section is behind one of the goals. That makes the atmosphere better. It's going to be unreal!"

A fan of the Blues since the mid-80s, Shane has never seen his beloved side lift the FAI Cup or clinch a Premier Division Title. He says it's fantastic to have a team capable of competing at high levels again.

"I'm following the Blues since the mid-80s. I didn't get to see the leagues in the mid-60s or '70s. I didn't even see the cup win in 1980. There's a lot of fans, generations of fans, that haven't really seen us do anything. They've seen us win a first division, that kind of thing. We've got to one cup final. That was in 2004 and the wounds are STILL raw from that. We dream of winning cups, getting into Europe - and just having a fantastic team like we do at the moment."

'They can become legends'

Cup semis don't come around too often, and Alan Forristal says the competition represents a competition for the younger players and senior stars alike in the club to cement legendary status.

"It's an opportunity for them to become lifetime heroes of this football club. When you consider now the likes of Brian Gardiner. He's a legend in Waterford forever. He scored the winner against Pats in the final in 1980. Other players from that team, they might be from England. They're still coming over here for a weekend and they're well looked after. There's always a great buzz. I remember a few years ago, Sid Wallace was home. He was up in Norris' Bar, and so many people came up just to see Sid. He sat down at the table and people were just in awe of his stories from the past. It's an opportunity now for these boys now to be looked upon as heroes by kids and future generations. They can be legends of this club forever."

Waterford FC and Bohemians will be brought to you live on WLR thanks to McConnell's Toyota Waterford, with Ray Scott and Matt Keane taking you through all the action.
