Waterford Premier League side Dungarvan United are in the process of recovering the 'glass' pitch.

The second field was previously used by the club for their various teams at schoolboy and schoolgirl age grades.

However, the club had been left without access to the facility for a number of years.

Waterford Council recently purchased the sports complex and surrounding land from a group of former Waterford Crystal workers.

Fine Gael Councillor, Damien Geoghegan formally proposed the disposal of 3.7 acres to Dungarvan United at the most recent Plenary meeting of Waterford City and County Council with all 30 Councillors present voting unanimously in favour of the proposal.

€70,000 will have to be provided to ensure the transfer goes through which Dungarvan United are currently fundraising for.

Cllr Geoghegan says it is a 'game changer' for the club.

"That's certainly good news for Dungarvan and Dungarvan United and I just want to pay tribute to the council officials. There was an awful lot of work that went on behind the scenes," he said.

"They're a club that are doing exceptional work locally in Dungarvan. They were restricted in what they could do with the amount of ground they had and this is a game changer for them."

Fine Gael Cllr Pat Nugent seconded the motion put forward by Cllr Geoghegan and wished to pay tribute to the Waterford glass workers for their forward thinking.

"We'd like to acknowledge the Waterford Glass workers. 127 of them in the social club that had the foresight of buying it originally and to sell it to the Waterford Glass and hopefully that is going to make Dungarvan United stronger," he said.
