Beth Carton wins Camogie Player of the Year 2023

Beth Carton wins Camogie Player of the Year 2023

"The girl is the best I've seen, in anything. In her approach, her attitude, her personality, her demeanor, her support for her teammates, her support for her club - she does a huge amount of work with the little girls in De La Salle as well. Easy to coach, eager to learn; you could a 300-page book on how good Beth Carton is and you'd need more pages. You could throw it across the county and everyone would agree. I would find it very difficult to find any word that would be negative about her and I mean that from the bottom of my heart. An incredible athlete...a good pal, she's a gem and she's ours. We talk about the Limerick hurlers - and they're pretty good - Beth is up there with them. I would sit down on an open mic debate with anyone on this one and challenge them that our Beth Carton is one of the best...the best, I don't know." - Former Waterford Camogie Manager Sean Power on Beth Carton.

For the first time in her career, Waterford's Beth Carton has been named senior camogie player of the year.

It comes after a season where Carton was the driving force behind Waterford's success as they reached the All-Ireland final for the first time in 78 years.

Carton shot an eye-watering 6 goals and 121 points in 13 games this season, securing a fourth All-Star award in the process.

She beat out stiff competition to claim the top honours on the night, with Cork pair Saoirse McCarthy and Amy O Connor both missing out. O'Connor was the star of the All-Ireland final scoring a hattrick of goals to break Waterford hearts, while McCarthy was the heartbeat of all things good in the Cork midfield in 2023.

Captain Lorraine Bray took home her third All-Star award and Vikki Faulkner picked up her first at cornerback, despite leaving the field in the opening minutes of the All-Ireland with a serious knee injury.
The De La Salle ace Carton was central to the Deise's campaign which saw them battle Cork to defeat in that All-Ireland final, where she scored 7 of Waterford's 9 points.
In their come-from-behind win beating Tipperary in the semifinal, she notched 8 points of the Déise's 1.11.
Speaking to Marie Crowe when accepting her Player of the Year award Carton said it was amazing to see  "young girls holding hurleys that we would never have seen before. We’re just hoping that we can go back next year and try and go that one step further. There was a great buzz and we are very grateful. People in Waterford are great to get behind the team and we are extremely grateful for that.”

In Croke Park on Saturday night, Camogie Association Uachtarán Hilda Breslin said; “2023 has been an extraordinary year, and we are delighted to pay tribute to the outstanding achievements and exceptional talent of our players.
