Thomas Barr continues his hunt for a place at the Summer Olympics on Saturday morning when he runs in Switzerland.

The Ferrybank AC man goes in the 400m hurdles at the Geneva Athletics meeting, just two days removed from his latest run in Poland.

Barr clocked 48.79 on Thursday, leaving him 0.9 of a second shy of the automatic qualifying standard of 48.70.

His placing in Poland does however give him a significant kick up the Road to Paris rankings. He has now jumped to 36th with the top 40 being handed their ticket to the games.

The Dunmore native recently won gold at the European Championships in Italy as part of the 4x400 mixed relay team. The 31-ear-old told RTE Sport that "medals do not come aroud that often," as he lifted gold in what are his sixth european championships.

"We knew off the back of the world relays that we had a really good shot and not just a medal for this, but if we really got it right on the day - which we did - we got a Championship record, close to a world record and a gold coming away from it, and not just on the line, we took it by storm."

If Barr does qualify for the fast approaching Olympics, he will line up wearing the Irish singlet in his third Olympic games having placed fourth in the 400m hurdles final in Rio, as well as having competed at the Tokyo games.

While he is on course to qualify, he will still have to contend with the national championships next weekend where others will have an eye on the Ferrybank AC mans throne.
