Centre forward Mark Fitzgerald and centre back Gary Cullinane also caught the eye for Michael Flynn's side. They were guilty of fourteen wides over the hour.
Waterford panellist Jordan O'Sullivan netted a second half goal for a plucky Portlaw. Veteran Michael Donnelly got a superb consolation point.
Dessie Hutchinson was back in the starting line-up for Gaultier. He kicked a mark on his return to the team.
JJ Hutchinson rattled the top corner of the net after just 50 seconds. He accounted for 1-4 in the first half. Dessie converted an advanced mark while Niall McSweeney landed a long range free as they went in 1-6 to 0-2 ahead at the break.
DJ Foran kicked Portlaw's first point from a free on eleven minutes. Rory O'Connell was also on target for Noel Mackey's men.

Caoimhain Maguire, Mark Fitzgerald, Gary Cullinane and Niall McSweeney all raised white flags to leave it 1-10 to 1-2 at the end of the third quarter.
JJ Hutchinson tagged on two late points off his reliable right boot. Portlaw captain Michael Donnelly plugged away, despite suffering an injury in the first half, and curled over a consolation score off his left.
