WATERFORD'S Ben Johnson has been named on the Irish men’s hockey team that will compete this summer at the Olympic Games in Paris!

The 23-year-old Waterford man - the youngest member of the squad - found out a few days prior to the official announcement yesterday afternoon (Monday) by the Olympic Federation of Ireland and has described it as a "really special moment" to see his name featuring as part of the team.

Captained by Sean Murray (Lisburn), the Irish team clinched one of the coveted places at the Final Qualification event in Valencia earlier this year, when they defeated Korea 4-3 in a scintillating final match.

Having narrowly missed out on qualifying for the Tokyo Olympics, the men’s team last competed at the Rio Olympics, with two of that squad returning for the Paris Olympics, goalkeeper David Harte (Cork) and Shane O’Donoghue (Dublin).

Ben Johnson told Damien Tiernan this morning on 'Deise Today' he felt "lucky" and "special" to be featured. He is travelling to Paris with the team on July 18.
