"It's very easy to get rid of you" and "we know where you are" were among the threats recently received by a Waterford councillor.

Mairéad Tobin says all the anonymous messages and calls stemmed from news that the hotel in Lismore was to become a direct provision centre.

Despite councillors not having been informed that this was going to happen, Councillor Tobin says the abusive messages kept coming.

The Fianna Fáil representative was co-opted onto the council in October, following the sudden passing of her father, sitting councillor James Tobin last summer.
