A Portlaw family has finally got the 'happy ending' they craved with their husband and father back in the family home two years after being taken seriously ill.

Michael Wade, from Beechwood Grove, walked into UHW with stomach cramps in October 2020 - and ended up battling a serious condition called Churg Strauss and having two strokes, which left him wheelchair-bound.

After long stretches in hospital and in the National Rehabilitation Centre, he was deemed fit to return home but the problem was that the house wasn't wheelchair accessible.

After a community 'Go Fund Me' effort and a council adaptation grant, major work took place at the house.

Michael and his wife Bernadette - who had been staying in neuro-residential rehabilitation housing at The Paddocks in Williamstown - were finally able to return to their Portlaw home on Friday, September 30 last.

Their daughter Michelle spoke to Damien Tiernan on Deise Today this morning (Friday) about the family's delight to have Michael, and their mum, back home.
