A UCC scientist and astronomer who is from Tramore originally has been involved in a major scientific discovery!

An explosion that caused a kilonova was captured by scientists for the first time using the James Webb Space Telescope. The scientists observed the event which could help explain where all life comes from.

Local Tramore scientist based in the UCC School of Physics, Dr. Mark Kennedy, was part of the group of scientists who observed the explosion.

He spoke about the significance of the event to Maria McCann on Déise Today this morning (Thurs, October 26).

The Waterford native explained that the discovery occurred when two neutron stars collided and created energy that released heavy elements such as tellurium which makes up many things on Earth.
