Tributes have flooded in nationwide following the passing of one of the most synonymous voices of the Irish music scene, Christy Dignam.

The Aslan frontman battled with cancer since 2013, and passed peacefully surrounded by his loved ones yesterday.

Bursting onto the scene in the mid-80s, Aslan, fronted by Dignam, were adored for hits such as 'Crazy World', 'This Is' and 'Where's The Sun'.

Last September, Aslan was forced to postpone what would have been the biggest concert of their career, in the 3Arena as a result of what was described then as a “setback” with the singer’s ongoing cancer treatment.

Dignam performed in Waterford on many occasions - and spoke regularly with WLR's Geoff Harris among others.

On Deise Today with Damien Tiernan this morning, a variety of tributes were paid to Christy, who was described as one of the true characters of Irish music, the voice of a generation, and a uniquely captivating performer.

Damien spoke to Mike Hanrahan from Stockton's Wing, a colleague and friend of the late Christy, while WLR Head of Music, Ray C, spoke with Dave Fanning.

"We'll all sing his songs. We'll all celebrate him. He was a friend. We'll remember the star, the great songman, the performer - but the man was what you saw. An honest, decent man."
