Bonnie Boux, who's worked on various theatrical productions in Waterford, is bringing Making a Holy Show of Yerself to The Reg in Waterford on Sunday May 12th. She co-wrote the show with Paddy Fagan (AKA Fr Enda) and described it to me as a "two person comedy show in the style of a caberet mass." Bonnie says it's not to be taken seriously and the aim is that everyone who comes along has the craic. It has been compared to the likes of Fr Ted and Little Britain. You'll find out more here
What's it all about?
Father Enda and Sister Sheila (Bonnie Boux) have both been kicked out of the church, and so set about putting on their own, all-inclusive mass that's a little different from the norm. You're encouraged to dress up if you come along to Making a Holy Show of Yerself and bear in mind there will be plenty of audience interaction, music and live entertainment.
Controversy
Bonnie acknowledges that there was quite a backlash when the show was first aired in Dublin, something she said she wasn't expecting as the intention was never to offend people. A religious group contacted some of the venues that were staging the show, and began a petition in an attempt to stop it going ahead. Bonnie says she always listens to the points of view of others and wants to reassure people that this is a satire and not an attack on anyone's personal beliefs.
