The event celebrates the African culture and is supported by Waterford City and County Council. It's held annually in many locations across the country. You'll find out more here.
Afro-Irish people in Waterford
The African union comprises over 50 countries and many of those countries are represented here in the Deise; from Nigeria to Cameroon to South Afrcia to Ethiopia to Kenya, and lots more besides. The ethos of Africa Day is to remind people that Africans are now 'as one' and that there is a huge Afro-Irish community in Ireland. The community of Waterford is invited to come along on Thursday June 6th and celebrate the culture.
What's happening and where
It all kicks off at 11am at o'Connell Street, Waterford City's Cultural Quarter, and it runs until 3pm with all events free. I was joined in studio by committee members Gianni and Alex, who promised that anyone who attends will taste, smell and hear Africa. There will be singing, dancing, drumming, hair-braiding, a circus, a mini-farm, plenty of food, flags and lots more.
