I was joined in studio by award-winning poet, Dungarvan native Clodagh Beresford Dunne, who chatted to me about the upcoming workshop, as well as her own ventures at the moment, with readings coming up at a number of literary festivals. She also recited some of her amazing work.
"How to Write a Novel" with Richard Skinner
Clodagh tells us that Colligan Falls is hosting a three-day, morning workshop with Richard Skinner, on Friday 24th, Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th May. Skinner is a writer working across fiction, life writing, essays, non-fiction and poetry. He has published three novels with Faber & Faber, three books of non-fiction and three books of poetry. His work has been nominated for several prizes and is published in eight languages.
As Director of the Fiction Programme at Faber Academy, London, he created the flagship “Writing a Novel” six-month course, in 2009 and since then has helped hundreds of writers find their voice.
Who is the class aimed at?
It's suitable for writers of every level and comprises a set of three morning Masterclasses on Setting, Plotting and Editing. Unfortunately places are almost completely booked out, but you might be lucky. You can get in touch with Clodagh about it here.
Setting: This Masterclass will look at the vital role a place plays in a story, with specific reference to The Sheltering Sky, Wuthering Heights and The Outsider as perfect examples of a ‘fusion’ between character and setting.
Plotting: What is the difference between story and plot? This Masterclass explores this question, so crucial to understand for any writer, new or otherwise.
Editing: This Masterclass will try to answer those daunting questions when it comes to editing.
Richard Skinner will also be in The Book Centre, Waterford
If you can't make the workshop, Richard will be at The Book Centre, Waterford, at 3pm Sunday May 26th for a reading and a Q&A.
