People who have lost loved ones in road crashes are being encouraged to attend an event in Waterford this weekend.

World Day of Remembrance For Road Traffic Victims is taking place at the Granville Hotel at 2.30 pm on Sunday.

Families who have lost loved ones in Road Traffic Collisions are invited to bring along a framed photo of their loved ones to the service.

The Road Safety Authority says it provides an opportunity to draw the public's attention to the impact of road collisions.

Waterford woman Christina Donnelly, whose son Brendan was killed by a drunk driver in 2009, explains what will be happening

"You don't have to come alone, you can bring as many friends, as many relatives as you want. everybody is absolutely welcome.

"The most important thing about this service is the exchange of phone numbers and the way [the families] were able to talk to people.

"They got help from other families and vice versa because grief is in different stages.

"It's a coming together of families with so much love, there is sadness on the day naturally but the support is immense.

125 people have been killed on Irish roads this year.

Christina is appealing to drivers not to take any chances:

"I would ask anybody who hears this today to please be aware, don't take any chances, don't drink and drive.

"God forbid, we don't want it to be your family having to come to one of these services.

"Families who are bereaved by preventable road crashes, never get over it. Your life is changed forever."
