A new whiskey blending and distilling experience is to be developed in Kilmacthomas.

This comes as local councillors have voted to sell the lease for the former mill to Provenance Spirits Limited.

A condition is that a whiskey experience must open on site, in addition to the Council being paid €150,000.

Proposing the transfer was local Labour Party councillor Ger Barron. He noted the previous attempts to rejuvenate the now vacant property.

"This mill has been in the Council's ownership for nearly 20 years now and there have been many of false starts. I'm very confident that this time we have somebody who will develop it in good stead."

The iconic building is a protected structure. Its history dates back to a time when it operated as a mill making blankets for soldiers during the First World War.

Following that, it served as a drying facility for local company Flahavans.

Councillors voted to transfer to sell the mill to Provenance Spirits Limited. The ownership will transfer once the whiskey experience is open to to the public.
