WLR’s Head of Music, Ray Colclough has been awarded a special IMRO Award in recognition of his ongoing support for Irish music creators.
The award was presented to Ray at the Radiodays Ireland Conference in Dublin last evening.
Ray has been a champion of music and in particular Irish Music since joining WLR.
Appointed Head of Music in 2015, Ray has introduced many initiatives to the WLR offering both on-air and online over the last 8 years. Ray’s passion is music and in addition to his radio work, he has worked as a club DJ and event promoter.
A delighted Ray Colclough said “WLR is a full-service station and plays music for an adult contemporary listener. The Irish music landscape is blessed with major talent at the moment, and we are very pleased to have such a variety of Irish music on WLR across prime-time radio and specialist Irish music programmes.”
With Moncrief, Carrie Baxter, Toucan and Backroad Smokers Club, and with the launch of new festivals like ‘All Together Now’ in recent years, Waterford is a hot bed of music right now.
WLR has just launched a new Irish Trad and Folk programme to compliment the Country and Irish programmes. The station has a dedicated online station called Absolute Irish Radio and Ray has also introduced a new podcast called ‘Ear on Eire’.
Commitment to Music
Michael Byrne, Programme Director for WLR said; “IMRO represent songwriters, composers, and music publishers across the country so for Ray to receive this award on their behalf reflects the commitment he has to supporting music creators of all genres.
Since joining WLR, Ray has been a real champion for Irish music and Waterford artists. Very few people get recognised individually at this level so Ray should be very proud of his achievement.”
WLR Managing Director Des Whelan said he was delighted that Rays contribution to promoting Irish Music has been recognised “Ray has such a passion for music and for promoting the quality of both local and Irish musicians and bands."
He added: "Ray is part of a very talented programming team in WLR and he has been a huge part of the stations success and also in developing WLR’s indigenous brand and sound. Most importantly Ray is both a pleasure to work with and hugely popular with WLR listeners and this award is richly deserved. Well done, Ray”.
WLR is about to launch Irish Music Month and Waterford Music Week and Ray is looking forward to the months ahead promoting Irish and Waterford singers and musicians.
