The President of Waterford Institute of Technology says there's a huge sense of optimism over the future of the Technological University for the South East following the appointment of former HEA CEO Tom Boland to oversee the process.
Mr. Boland has been appointed as Programme Exeuctive Director in order to accelerate the progress of the merger between Carlow and Waterford ITs, having previously played a similar role in the establishment of the Munster TU.
The Higher Education Minister Simon Harris says it's vital that the South East is no longer the only region without a university.
Prof. Willie Donnelly, WIT President, says Tom Boland will being a wealth of experience to the role.
"Tom was the choice of both Carlow and Waterford when we went looking for a senior executive to take up this role," he says, "Tom has the experience of working with Munster TU, and will bring that experience to us. Also, as ex CEO of the HEA, he strands higher education."
"Secondly, I had a meeting a few weeks ago with Minister Harris. It was very clear that he was committed to the delivery of a Technological University for the South East."
