There will be no ambulance cover for west Waterford some nights this week.

That's according to Councillor Conor McGuinness, who claims that the west of the county was left with no ambulance cover on Sunday night.

Speaking to WLR News, Councillor McGuinness says it is not good enough.

"I received information from within the national ambulance service that shows west Waterford was left without a dedicated ambulance," he said.

"This will continue on at least three occasions this week due to rostering issues.

"... People in the area will be at risk and it is easy for people to become unwell. They will need assistance from an ambulance, resulting in longer wait times."

The Sinn Féin representative said there was just one ambulance operating in Youghal that was expected to cover an area from Midleton to Waterford City.

"The government and the National Ambulance Service need to double the number of paramedics," Councillor McGuinness continued.

"At the moment we don't have enough paramedics, which is leading to longer waiting times and is leading to ambulance workers being put under continued pressure.

"They are finishing shifts exhausted and working longer than they need to and they are the ones doing their best and providing an excellent service".
