West Waterford regeneration project underway

West Waterford regeneration project underway

Progress is being made in West Waterford as the first phase of the Cappoquin Regeneration project is underway.

The Department of Rural and Community Development is investing 6 million Euro for the project through its Rural Regeneration and Development Fund. Additional funding is being received from Waterford City and County Council and the Cappoquin Regeneration Company.

The project aims to adress vacancy and dereliction in the town centre and invest in the town centre's public domain.

Construction contracts were awarded in April from Waterford City and County Council for the refurbishment of three terraced houses and Moore’s Hotel on Main Street.

Conor Phelan Construction from Dungarvan was awarded the contract for the refurbishment of three terraced townhouses with design team led by DHB Architects of Waterford.

The project will transform the vacant townhouses into three new homes with ancillary mews accommodation at the rear on Green street.

The West Waterford area has further projects due with the Town and Village Renewal Scheme. The soccer club project includes a new boundary fence, community garden and extended walkway.

Works are expected to begin sometime in Autumn 2024 on the Cappoquin railway loop walk phase 1 – funded under the outdoor recreation infrastructure scheme with completion proposed by mid 2025.

It is envisaged this will be the first phase of a project that would eventually see the development of the entire Cappoquin Railway Loop Walk with the centrepiece being the refurbishment of Old Red Bridge railway viaduct.

The final phase of the project will enhance the public realm spaces, with particular focus on the market square and the twin bog area to improve pedestrian and traffic flow.

A consultant will be appointed in the coming months to complete the design and prepare tender documents.
