Public lighting in Rural Waterford needs to be addressed. That's the message from one local councillor, following calls from the public citing safety concerns.
Sinn Féin's Catherine Burke spoke to WLR, following a recent meeting of the Comeragh District.
"At our last Comeragh district meeting, I raised an issue about lighting in Dunhill. The district engineer told us there were plans in Dunhill to install more lighting coming into the village.
"This is not just an isolated issue in the Comeragh district. This is a county-wide problem when it comes to public lighting.
"We are a rural community, we feel that we are just as important as any other community and we need a functional efficient system balancing safety and environmental concerns up to aesthetics of lighting."
The contractor appointed to Waterford Council has been slow to repair lights across the county. Councillors have been raising the issue in recent years with some parts of the city and county left in the dark for weeks.
Cllr. Catherine Burke continued, "I had people telling me they were walking home from the beach at five or six o'clock in the evening in the winter in Bunmahon and the lights are out.
"People need access to the beach and other local amenities across all villages in the Comeragh district, however, they also have a right to access them in well-lit-up areas."
