Assisting people with housing and health are among the main aims of Waterford's newest councillor.

Joeanne Bailey has been co-opted by Sinn Féin to take the seat of Councillor Breda Brennan when she steps down later this month.

Originally from Wexford, Ms Bailey has been a member of the party for 15 years.

She paid tribute to the outgoing Councillor Brennan on Déise Today earlier:

"I'm happy to take on [the role] and I'll be forever grateful for everything that Breda did in seven years.

"She was the mayor - a fantastic mayor. She worked so hard in the community.

"But she's not going. She's going to be still in the community. I've been working alongside Breda and I was her Director of Elections in the last one and the work she does is just outstanding."

Councillor Brennan will vacate the seat on the 25th of May, after which Ms Bailey will take up the position.

She told Damien Tiernan that she's anxious to hit the ground running:

"Local councillors just working for the local people - that's what I'm about. I've been listening to it for years and I just want to make a difference, for people like me.

"Like, I'm 35. I have a husband who's after being out of work for nearly a year because of Covid. It took a toll.

"And I see families, low income, looking for social housing, affordable housing."
