Waterford is getting a full-service Volunteer Centre next year.

Currently, it's one of eight counties that doesn't have a full-time service.

The centre will assist people who want to volunteer in their community to find suitable roles and help local organisations to recruit volunteers.

It will also provide a range of other services including Garda vetting and training in volunteer management.

The Waterford Volunteer Centre is being funded by the Department of Rural and Community Development, and it's hoped it will open in summer 2020.

Amy Woods, Communications and Advocacy Manager with Volunteer Ireland, says they're looking for people to get involved in establishing the new centre:""

"It's absolutely brilliant news for Waterford. We're so delighted that we're finally getting a volunteer centre there. What we're doing at the moment is recruiting board members; and when that board is in place, they'll be local people making local decisions so they'll be tasked with finding the premises, getting everything up and running, hiring the staff. It's opened until the 8th of December; we have it divided up into different skills like finance, communications, but we're also looking for people who just know the community, people who volunteer themselves, or worked with organisations and really understand volunteering in the area."
