University Hospital Waterford is to pilot a new Baby Bundle scheme from February. The scheme was due to launch in Autumn of 2022 but delays in sourcing products for the bundles means a February date is now more likely. Speaking to WLR News, local Green Party TD, Marc Ó Cathasaigh said the delays were due to issues around product procurement.

He said: "There was an issue around making sure the contents of the box were right, that they were sourced in the right way, sourced sustainably, and would have a downstream effect within Irish producers. It was more important to get it done correctly than to get it done quickly in this case."

Following their 20 week scan, 500 expectant parents will receive a bundle of essential items for their new baby. Both University Hospital Waterford and the Rotunda Hospital, Dublin have been chosen to trial the scheme.

At the announcement, Minister for Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth, Roderic O’Gorman, TD said;

“I am delighted to have the opportunity to support families as they manage those essential first few weeks in their child’s life. This period can be challenging for parents, so it is crucial they get the practical support they need during this special time. This government is committed to ensuring children have the best start in life and to helping them reach their full potential.”

Nationwide Scheme

Deputy Ó Cathasaigh says he expects the scheme to be a success. He added: "The two hospitals are well placed, with the Rotunda being a city-based hospital and University Hospital Waterford having a much wider catchment area. It was important to get as broad a cross-section as possible as feedback from parents will drive this project forwards."

Based on feedback from 500 expectant parents in both the Rotunda Hospital and University Hospital Waterford, funding will be sought for a nationwide scheme.
