Students in Waterford are being warned about a rental scam that is happening at the moment.

There has been a few incidents in the county where properties are being falsely advertised.

Recently, in neighboring county Kilkenny,  one person was advertising under the name Hannah.

"Hannah" was demanding that students pay three months rent upfront.

"With people going back to college and the rental market the way it is, we would just advise people to never agree to rent a property through a website or social media," Tramore Garda Justin Shelly said on this week's Waterford Garda Watch.

Garda Shelly says you should always visit a property and meet the landlord before agreeing to rent it.

He had other useful tips such as never hand over cash as it is untraceable, never transfer bills into your name, and always ask for identification of a landlord.
