A Waterford Senator says the government is swimming against the tide when it comes to climate change.

Grace O'Sullivan tabled a motion calling for oil and gas prospecting in the Irish Exclusive Economic Zone to be banned.

She was told that the government has no plans to do that and that oil and natural gas will remain as significant elements of Ireland's energy supply while it transitions to more renewable sources.

Senator O’Sullivan said the Government had every opportunity to embrace renewable clean energies.

However Deputy Andrew Doyle says there is resistance in all communities to alternative energy proposals.

He said people are saying no to wind, no solar, no biomass.
