Waterford residential centre failed all 20 areas of HIQA inspection

An inspection conducted by HIQA at Comeragh Residential Services in Kilmeaden found the centre to be non compliant in 20 areas, one of which was considered to be a high risk level of non-compliance and 19 areas at a medium risk level.

The centre, run by the Brothers of Charity, which has a five adult capacity was found in the subsequent report to have an inadequate level of staffing, meaning the safety, care and support needs of residents could not be guaranteed.

The roster at the time of inspection showed just one adult was overseeing the care of all five residents from 8pm until 8am the following morning.

Additionally, the notification of incidents was found to be not in line with regulations, with one incident being reported to HIQA 16 days after it occurred.

Other areas of concern included infection control, risk management, governance and management, staff training, and resident's rights.

Following the inspection, Comeragh Residential Services reviewed the staff roster to ensure two staff are on duty throughout the night.

All areas of non-compliance were addressed by the centre by way of response to the inspection.
