The nuns of St Mary's Abbey in Glencairn in Co Waterford say their altar bread is Brexit-proof.

The Cistercian nuns produce over 300,000 Communion hosts a month, which they sell to clergy around the country and overseas.

It comes as one of the biggest ecclesiastical suppliers in the country say they've bulk bought altar wine and wafers in advance of a no-deal Brexit.

Desmond Wisley Ecclesiastical Supplies told the Irish Mail on Sunday that their Communion hosts are largely imported from Europe and transported via the UK landbridge.

Speaking to the paper, the nuns of St Mary's Abbey, who are encouraging the clergy to use their home-made hosts, say demand has increased.

Sr Fiachra Nutty said: "Our volume has gone up considerably. In the past, we baked five times a month, and now we're baking nine times a month."
